Hi, I'm interested to know people's opinions, thoughts, experiences, etc.. on horse breed or combination breeds suitable for training a polo pony. I know thoroughbreds are usually trained up for polo...any others out there? I have a cross thoroughbred australian quarter horse, 15.2hh, 3yr old gelding and he is very very fast along with quick sharp turning ability and loves to be playful (I have a picture on my page), I'm not sure of his potential but he plays along with me when I practise stick and ball with one of my mares. Thanks, would love your ideas:)

if you cross thb and arab and mustang you get the perfect polo pony in my opinion
have you ever tried breeding/playing this combo?
Hi Gabby
For low goal (up to about 6-goal), I can’t imagine a better formula than the Australian stockhorse x thoroughbred (which I think is a similar type to the Criollo x thoroughbreds that Argentina has). In my experience, they are more likely to remain sound than the pure thoroughbreds and have the perfect temperament. Above 10-goal, I’m told they can lack the necessary speed that the pure thoroughbred has.
I have known a few appaloosas out there, too, including Millamolong’s legendary Lenny-the-Leopard, who I had the privilege of playing when he was 27-years-old and still a force to be reckoned with! >: - )
