The oldest (modern) tournaments I could find are:
* Indian Inter-regimental (1877, 9th Lancers)
* British Inter-regimental (1878, 5th Royal Irish Lancers)
* (Hurlingham's) Open Cup ( < 1878, old equivalent of the Gold Cup)
* Bombay Open Cup (1883)
* Westchester Cup (1886)

The Evolution of Polo by Horace A. Laffaye has details. ( http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=9i-bgOjaVysC )

Argentine started in 1893, US Open in 1904.

Not a tournament but worthy of note is the Cambridge vs Oxford varsity match which has been a regular fixture since 1878.
Great information.
I agree 2.
:)
Thanks Mark!
It really useful, though I had just seen it.

Again, thank you very much.
