Reinstate Polo as an Olympic Sport!

Reinstate Polo as an Olympic Sport!

Polo was part of the Olympic programme in 1900, 1908, 1920, 1924 and 1936. With this site, and specifically this group, together we demostrate our support for the FIP in its lobbying of the IOC to reinstate Polo into the Olympics

What steps are the FIP taking to make to make this happen and how can we help?

I'm still interested in the criteria to be accepted as a "Olympic sport". As I red all comments, the main reason is that you need more countries/teams. However: there is no rule to be rejected or accepted on this item. For instance: How many counties are playing "Curling"? I can't believe this should be a reason to ban Polo from the Olympics. A money mather? Perhaps; because playing polo is more a " Let the best payed man play" event, but this is also true on many Olympic sports were horses are involved.  So, I think the problem relies in the polo board, where no or to less action is taken...?  The same problems, however, are an issue within the polocrosse federation, I heard. Maybe an idea is to join all federations together as an Equine Olympic Games Federation, like the  Olympic  Wintergames. There are more horse related sports than I can count on 10 fingers.

Here is the reply of the NOC: "You may find all answers on: http://www.olympic.org/en/content/Footer-Pages/Documents/Olympic-Ch...

You can find the International Olympic Committee's rule on the recognition of International Sports Federations in the Olympic Charter. * Chapter 3, Rule 26, p. 57". Now, that is a quick response. Reading all this, I don't understand why it's taking so long to comply on those rules by the FIP....

Ok, I did get a reply, but not a real answer on the question of the NOC/NSF : "How does a sport become Olympic?

To make it onto the Olympic programme, a sport first has to be recognised: it must be administered by an International Federation which ensures that the sport's activities follow the Olympic Charter. If it is widely practised around the world and meets a number of criteria established by the IOC session, a recognised sport may be added to the Olympic programme on the recommendation of the IOC's Olympic Programme Commission."

Now, this is of course the text found on the "IOC, www.olympic.org", so I asked for the "number of criteria established by the IOC session" part. A reply of the IOC will follow soon, I hope...

And doing the deed: I did send this question to the Dutch IOC board, ie What the terms are. The reply will e posted here.

Well.... I think it's a lobby mather. Why sports as hilarious "" or bobsleighing are Olympic sports is a riddle to me... Although F1 is not one either!
I think the best way is to ask the committee what the exact rules are to be accepted as an Olympic sport. That should not be that hard. Maybe a response could be placed here? As with all sports: If you know the rules you can play the game. Now, I'm not that old: What was the reason polo was banned from the Olympics? A new try to be accepted is well worth it.... Agood goal for the polo board. And if there is no board we create one, easy huh?

Somebody had commented that one of the main reasons why polo was suspended from the Olympic sports was because there were too many Anglo Saxon sports admitted as part of the games. I believe that this is not the reason, as everybody knows, Argentine polo teams were those who won most of the competitions; here in PCW we have Luis Duggan whose grandfather was a glory of our polo together with Pepe Duggan his brother (Irish ancestry not English). Many years ago, when Pepe Duggan was still alive I saw him at some friends home and he said that the reason was that polo for most of the authorities of the Olympic Committee was a sport just “for few” or for an elite. Anyone who had visited Argentine knows that here we have thousands of players and fans. Just going to Palermo for an Open is a unique experience in polo, from both sides of the field you will see our fans following their teams with passion. Hope that the OC will review one day their decision.
