If applicable, what's the highest handicap you have held?
What's your preferred playing position(s)?
I just love the sport. I love the horses and the beauty of the movement of the horses and players together. There's intensity, poetry and great respect for the game. There is nothing more elegant and powerful than Polo.
Where's your favourite Polo destination?
ARGENTINA!!! Of Course!! I go every year and the apartment that I own, (which I also rent to tourists), is just minutes from the Polo field in Buenos Aires and very close to the casinos in Palermo. I love getting lost in the sport and just being there and taking it all in. Please Check out: www.vrbo.com (#104122)
What's your favourite mallet brand?
What's your favourite Polo book?
I've collected a number of Polo-related books for my apartment in Buenos Aires (Palermo off of Cervino Street). My favorite at the moment (because I also dance tango) is: Masculinities: Football, Polo and the Tango in Argentina by Eduardo P Archetti (Author).
In a nutshell, the book provides a fascinating introduction to the worlds of male-dominated sports in Argentina, and how notions of maleness are related to the formation of a national identity." of 'maleness.' Believe it or not, these issues come up also in my work teaching ESL to Argentine executives, both in NYC and in Buenos Aires.
What's the secret to improving your Polo game?
As a spectator, I just enjoy being there and taking it all in. I love the sounds and the smells and the earthiness and finess! I love the poetry of motion of both man and horse. I really enjoy meeting all of you!!!!
Where do you work and what's your role?
I teach ESL to international business executives and attorneys. I'm a former Legal Assistant and worked for 4 years in Frankfurt, Germany for a large, international law firm; a few months in Istanbul for the Middle East HQ of a major company as the Business English teacher, and taught English and Nutrition for three years in Botswana, Southern Africa. Teaching brought me to Buenos Aires four years ago and I fell in love with the city and the people. My students all work for major international corporations and a number of them also play polo. Their companies often sponsor Polo and Tennis events and my students are sometimes called upon to make major presentations to various sport-related companies. This is where I come in as their teacher and cross-cultural mentor. Polo is also not far removed from my family. My father played polo many years ago and my late uncle trained and boarded racing horses for years just outside of Boston and New York.
What other interests do you have aside from Polo?
Besides teaching, I love world music, dancing the tango and salsa, reading (mainly non-fiction), traveling around the world, experiencing new things, meeting new people, people watching at the outdoor cafe, going to the theatre or a movie, and simply relaxing and enjoying the moment.
Living in BA must be an amazing adventure. World HQ for polo and the Tango. My cousin spends a month each year in BA and raves about it. She is a Tangonista. Hope to make the trip south to spend some time during your polo season.
